Ask any fleet operator in India what keeps them up at night and licence mismatches come up fast. Not accidents. Not fuel prices. A driver holding an LMV-TR licence sitting behind the wheel of a 32-foot container, because that was the truck available and nobody checked.

An LMV-TR driver on a 32FT container is the most common failure in Indian trucking. It is also the one that voids insurance claims most reliably.

 

Checking the Licence

What you are confirming: the licence is live, not suspended, and the class covers the vehicle. If a driver holds LMV-TR and MGV but you are putting him on a heavy vehicle, that is a no.

One caveat worth knowing. State-level suspensions do not always sync to the national database immediately. Check the physical licence too. If there is a discrepancy between the card and the portal, treat the portal as authoritative and ask questions.

 

Checking the Truck

The fitness certificate is where most trucks fail. RC valid, insurance paid, fitness lapsed three months ago. The vehicle is not legally roadworthy and neither the shipper nor the transporter usually catches it until a checkpoint does.

For interstate work, check the permit covers every state on the route. A vehicle running on a Gujarat state permit will get stopped at the Maharashtra border.

 

Police Verification

This confirms identity, address, and criminal record. It runs through the local police station or state police portals where those exist. Timelines vary widely — some states turn it around in a fortnight, others take a month or more.

What the Driver Should Be Carrying

  • Driving licence with the class endorsement matching the vehicle

  • PUC certificate
  • LR and e-way bill for the consignment

 

Anything missing from that list is a reason for a checkpoint to hold the vehicle.

Four things account for nearly all of it.

Wrong licence class, already covered. Expired fitness certificate, because nobody re-checks after the initial onboarding. Insurance that lapsed between the last verification and this trip. And missing permits for interstate routes, which catches out operators who mostly run within one state and occasionally take a longer job.

The pattern in three of those four is the same: verification was done once and never repeated. Documents expire. A driver verified in January may be running an uninsured vehicle by August.
