Small and mid-size trucks only for the hill roads
For pickups in Darjeeling town and the tea estates, the practical choices are an Ace / Dost / Pickup (750 kg - 1,100 kg), a 14FT Eicher (3.5 ton) or a 17FT Eicher (5 ton). Longer trucks and 32FT containers cannot safely work most hill roads and estate tracks. If your goods need a bigger truck, the usual way is to bring them down to Siliguri, which is about 65 km below, and load the large truck there.
Tell us the exact pickup point when you book, including whether the approach road has tight bends or a steep last stretch. A truck that cannot reach the gate costs everyone a day.

What moves in and out of Darjeeling
Tea comes first. Packed tea chests and bags from the estates go down to Siliguri and on to Kolkata, where much of the crop is auctioned and blended, and also to buyers in other states. Smaller volumes of orange, cardamom and handicraft goods leave the hills too. Inbound, the district needs almost everything from the plains: rice and flour, FMCG, building material, hotel supplies for the tourist season, and hardware.
Tea is light for its volume and must stay dry. A closed body is the safe default, especially from June to September when the hills get heavy rain and landslides can block a road for hours.

The hill section is slow. The 65 km down to Siliguri can take as long as 150 km on the plains, and in the monsoon it can take longer. Plan delivery dates with that in mind. Siliguri itself is under our 100 km minimum, so a trip that ends there is not something we book; a trip that passes through it is.
Darjeeling to Kolkata fares for hill-friendly trucks
Truck freight rates are not fixed. What a Darjeeling load costs depends on the route, vehicle type, load capacity needed, cargo, pickup date and how many trucks are running that lane that week. Fewer trucks are willing to climb into the hills than to load in Siliguri, so give us a little more notice for a hill pickup, and more again during the tea flush months.

Bringing supplies up for the season
Hotels, homestays and shops in Darjeeling stock up before the spring and autumn tourist peaks, and the same weeks see the hill roads crowded with tourist vehicles. If you are a supplier sending a load up from Kolkata or Patna, book the truck so it climbs early in the day; afternoon traffic on the Hill Cart Road and around Ghum moves at walking pace. Enter Darjeeling as the drop point and give the receiver's exact location, because many hotel lanes in town are too tight for even a 14FT truck. In that case we will suggest an Ace and a nearby unloading spot instead.
Paperwork on a Darjeeling load
For goods worth over Rs.50,000, the consignor or consignee generates the e-way bill. Tea estates and traders normally issue it with the invoice. Payment is split into three parts: Booking Amount at booking confirmation, 90% at loading once the truck reaches the pickup location, and the remaining Balance at delivery before unloading begins. Accepted: NEFT, IMPS, UPI (PhonePe, GPay), and major debit and credit cards. No cash payments accepted.
Is my cargo insured?
Transit insurance is arranged by the customer, not by TruckGuru.
