The road distance is about 2,160 km and truck transit is 4-5 days. This is the longest lane on many shippers' list, and the driver stops each night.
The truck crosses central India and comes into the east through Bihar, with the final stretch on the East-West corridor through Purnia and Kishanganj into West Bengal. Depending on the line the driver takes, it passes through five or more states. One e-way bill covers it all for goods above Rs.50,000; its validity runs on distance (about a day per 200 km), so it comfortably covers a 4-5 day trip if generated close to loading.
Plan for the far end as much as the road. A truck that reaches Siliguri at night on day four will usually unload on day five.
Picking the vehicle for a 4-5 day trip
Over five days, cargo cover matters more than on a short lane. Our advice is simple: if it can be damaged by rain or dust, send it in a container. A 20FT container (6.5 ton) or 32FT container (7-8 ton) suits cartons, pharma and electricals. Monsoon and other trouble spots
From June to September, flooding in north Bihar and North Bengal can close or slow sections of the highway for a day or two. Do not promise your buyer an exact delivery date in those months; quote a window.
The other problem is the final address. Siliguri distributors often work out of godowns in areas around the city rather than the centre, and city entry for heavy trucks may be timed. Give the full godown address, landmark and receiver's number at booking.
Before Durga Puja and Diwali, distributors in the east stock heavily. Book 3-4 days ahead in September and October.
Going on to Nepal, Bhutan or Sikkim?
We book the truck to Siliguri or another address you specify within India. Cross-border shipments to Nepal or Bhutan need customs clearance through your clearing agent, which is a separate step. For Sikkim, tell us the final address so we can confirm whether the same truck can go up the hill roads or whether the goods should be transferred at Siliguri.
