Five states and a gateway check
The usual line is north on NH 48 through Gujarat and Rajasthan, past the Delhi region through Haryana, then up NH 44 across Punjab via Ludhiana and Jalandhar to Pathankot. The truck enters Jammu and Kashmir at Lakhanpur. That is Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab and then the Union Territory, so the e-way bill has to be in order for the whole run. It is generated by the consignor or consignee for goods above Rs.50,000, and its validity is counted by distance, so a long lane like this needs the right validity set from the start.
Transit is 3-4 days. Drivers rest at night, and that is part of the estimate, not a delay.
Lakhanpur is where paperwork gets looked at. A missing invoice copy or an e-way bill that has lapsed is the single most common reason a Jammu truck loses half a day. Check validity before the truck reaches Punjab, and extend it if loading started late.

Picking a truck for 1,900 km
Closed containers are the default for anything in cartons. Pharma, FMCG and apparel need to stay dry and sealed over three or four days, and a 20FT or 32FT container does that without depending on tarpaulin. Open 17FT and 19FT Eichers make sense for pipes, steel sections, tiles or machinery that can take some weather. Plan for December and January. Fog in Punjab and Haryana slows night movement, and the transit estimate assumes reasonable visibility. Book 3-4 days ahead in winter and avoid committing a delivery date to your Jammu buyer that has no slack in it.
